Community Profile
Physical Characteristics:
- Density of Housing: Brampton and Mississauga are densely populated, resulting in a large number of targets located within a small area
- Access to Roads: Major roads are surrounding all neighbourhoods allowing for a quick escape for criminals after committing the crime
- Layout of Neighbourhood: Limited visibility at night as well as poorly lit streets are attractive for offenders when looking for a suitable target
- Property Types: Peel Region has a high number of detached houses, which have a lower chance of alerting the surrounding neighbours during a break in
Social Characteristics:
- Community Engagement: Residents generally do not know and interact with much of their street, leading to a disconnect amongst the community
- Crime Reporting: Not all crimes (unrelated) are reported, which results in inaccurate numbers and police presence
- Neighbourhood Watch: Lack of programs such as Neighbourhood Watch have a negative effect on the neighbourhood
- Social Cohesion: When a neighbourhood is tightly knit, it often becomes unattractive to commit crimes in that area since criminals talk amongst each other about suitable areas to target
Community Mobilization & Engagement Model:
- Community Mobilization & Crime Prevention (Yellow):
The problem of break and enters falls under the Community Mobilization & Crime Prevention section of the Community Mobilization & Engagement Model.
