Problem Statment

Break and enters have been on a disturbingly upward trend in the Region of Peel. From 2021 to 2023, break and enters have increased 33% in the region. This has affected all communities, as criminals view houses with no cameras and low lighting as suitable targets for this type of crime. On the bright side, this can be mitigated by educating residents and assisting neighbourhoods to tackle this issue at a local level. We, as the community within the Region of Peel, have all the potential needed for creating a solution with some planning and co-ordination. Our proposal is to partner up the community with police agencies to target specific crime hotspots by officers training civilians which will spend time speaking to residents on how they can improve their housing and business for safety. This would provide a walk through manual for homeowners and businesses to talk about the history of B&Es and how to combat the crime. This meeting would also be an educational opportunity to inform residents about a new app named Secure Central Hub, which would provide neighbours with a platform to discuss suspicious activity around the area. This would allow neighbourhoods to develop a sense of community by sharing their tough times and empathizing with one another. Unlike traditional social media, this app would serve as as outlet for communities to come together and turn a negative situation into a positive one. This is in hopes of creating a strong social fabric amongst neighbourhoods.
